Janamashtami is the celebration of the birth of our beloved Shri Krishna.
Lord Krishna is the irresistible God who embodies the playfulness and innocence of Bal Gopal, the passionate romance of the cowherd Gopal, and the boundless devotion of the devotees for whom Krishna is the ultimate saviour.
Janamashtami is celebrated across India in several unique ways, each approach full of abundant festivity and fun.
My earliest memories of Janamashtami are pulling out mother’s brightest saris to make a jhoola for the infant Krishna.
Growing up in the northernmost part of India, in Kashmir; separated from Mathura by mountains and rivers, my Krishna was all about songs and stories.
The jhoola making was complicated for the small hands but the songs playing on Akashwani made everything easy.
The wait from one song to next was thrilling, each new song greeted by dance or an imaginary bansuri playing.
The Krishna in my head was often a mix of Mohd Rafi’s wisdom and Lata Mangeshkar’s description. Many years down the line but my Janamashtami is still incomplete without a potpourri of Bollywood songs.
I am sharing 25 of my favorite Bollywood Krishna songs which are a blend of love and devotion, innocence and virtue, as also mischief and plain dhamaal!
I have set the songs chronologically (old songs to new), and in doing so, the mood of the songs moves naturally from soft and melodious, to energetic and entertaining.
Hope you enjoy the songs as much as I loved making the playlist.

Kalyani imagines herself in Radha’s place and ask the moon to turn her dusky, taking away her fairness in return so that she can stealthily meet her lover at night.
